No Microsoft updates:
As of July 14 th , Microsoft will discontinue all updates and security patches including critical updates. To put this into perspective, in 2013 Microsoft released a total of 37 critical updates for Windows Server 2003 R2. No updates will result in a less stable and less secure infrastructure.
Ongoing maintenance costs:
The costs associated with maintaining aging hardware are likely to increase as parts become increasingly less available. Other cost considerations should also be made for intrusion detection systems, more advanced firewalls, and network segmentation simply to isolate 2003 Servers. Sticking with Windows Server 2003 will likely cost more in the long-term.
What it means for your business:
- Windows will no longer develop patches or security updates for unsupported software, which could render systems insecure and susceptible to external attackers.
- High complexity migrating from Windows Server 2003 (which is 32-bit) to Windows Server 2013 (which is 64-bit), which aren’t cross-compatible.
- New Servers and Infrastructure may be required
- Business-critical applications may need to be rewritten or replaced for them to remain operational.
- Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft Azure and Office 365 are all great options for migration, depending on your particular circumstance.
